How Many Days Can I Stay in Schengen?

Determine your maximum allowable trip length in Europe and see how future entry dates unlock additional travel days with our free schengen visa calculator.

The Basic Calculation Rule

For non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens visiting without a residence permit or long-stay visa, your maximum stay is determined by a single universal rule:

"You may stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period."

To find out how many days you can stay starting on an intended entry date, look backward 179 days from that date. Count every calendar day you were physically inside any Schengen country during that window. Subtract that number from 90 to find your baseline initial allowance.

Why Your Allowance Can Grow While You Are in Europe

Under the rolling 180-day window, your allowance is not static. If you had previous stays that are nearing the 180-day age limit, those days will roll out of the window while you are currently traveling in Europe.

For example, if you enter Europe with only 20 days remaining, but on day 15 of your trip an earlier 30-day visit rolls past the 180-day mark, you gain additional permissible days. Our automated 90/180 day rule calculator tracks this exact dynamic growth automatically so you can safely maximize your vacation.

3 Common Scenarios Explained

Scenario A: First-Time Visitor (Fresh Passport)

If you have not been inside the Schengen Area in the last 180 days, you have the full 90 days available immediately. You can spend 90 consecutive days inside the zone before having to leave for at least 90 full consecutive days.

Scenario B: Exhausted Quota (Spent Exactly 90 Days)

If you used all 90 days consecutively, you cannot re-enter the Schengen Area on a tourist status until at least 90 days have elapsed outside the territory. On day 91 outside, your first past day drops off, allowing a 1-day entry.

Scenario C: Frequent Short Trips

Travelers taking weekend breaks and week-long holidays throughout the year must calculate cumulative days on every individual date. Even if no single trip is longer than 10 days, cumulative days can easily breach 90 without automated tracking.
