The 29 Schengen Member Countries
Following the historic inclusion of Bulgaria and Romania, the Schengen Zone consists of 29 full member nations:
EU Countries That Are NOT in Schengen
It is a common misconception that all European Union members belong to the Schengen Zone. Two EU member states maintain independent national borders and separate stay allowances:
- Ireland: An EU member state that opted out of the Schengen Agreement to maintain the Common Travel Area (CTA) with the United Kingdom. Time in Ireland does not count toward your Schengen 90-day allowance.
- Cyprus: An EU member state and Schengen candidate that has not yet completed full Schengen integration. Travel in Cyprus does not consume your Schengen short-stay days.
Non-EU Countries That ARE in Schengen
Four nations are part of the Schengen Area despite not belonging to the European Union:
- Switzerland (Joined 2008)
- Norway (Joined 2001)
- Iceland (Joined 2001)
- Liechtenstein (Joined 2011)
Stays in Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein consume your 90/180-day short-stay quota identically to stays in France, Germany, or Spain.
