How the 90/180-Day Rule Applies in Croatia
⚠️ Single Shared Schengen Quota (No Separate National Allowance)
Time spent in Dubrovnik, Split, or Zagreb is strictly pooled with visits to all other 28 Schengen member countries. The previous separate Croatian national stay allowance no longer applies.
Under Regulation (EU) 2016/399 (the Schengen Borders Code), non-EU tourists and business travelers may stay in the Schengen Area for a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day rolling window. Both the day you enter Croatia and the day you depart count as full days of stay.
International Border Entry Points & EES System
When arriving in Croatia from outside the Schengen Zone (such as from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, or Asia), passport control is conducted at designated external border crossing points. These checkpoints are equipped for the automated European Entry/Exit System (EES):
- Zagreb Franjo Tuđman Airport (ZAG)
- Split Airport (SPU)
- Dubrovnik Airport (DBV)
Under the EES rollout, travelers register facial biometrics and fingerprints upon first entry, eliminating physical passport ink stamps in favor of centralized digital stay records.
Bilateral Treaties & Legal Context
Croatia joined the Schengen Area on 1 January 2023 and adopted the Euro. Land border controls with Slovenia and Hungary have been fully lifted.
Important Disclaimer: Bilateral agreements have complex interactions with the Schengen acquis. Border guards evaluate compliance on individual case facts. Always verify your eligibility with the official Ministry of the Interior (Ministarstvo unutarnjih poslova (MUP RH)) before planning extended stays beyond 90 days.
💡 Practical Travel Tip for Croatia
Trips across the border to Bosnia and Herzegovina or Montenegro exit the Schengen Area; re-entering Croatia counts as a new Schengen entry.
