How the 90/180-Day Rule Applies in Romania

⚠️ Single Shared Schengen Quota (No Separate National Allowance)

Days spent in Romania now count toward your 90/180-day Schengen short-stay quota shared with France, Germany, Italy, and other member states.

Under Regulation (EU) 2016/399 (the Schengen Borders Code), non-EU tourists and business travelers may stay in the Schengen Area for a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day rolling window. Both the day you enter Romania and the day you depart count as full days of stay.

International Border Entry Points & EES System

When arriving in Romania from outside the Schengen Zone (such as from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, or Asia), passport control is conducted at designated external border crossing points. These checkpoints are equipped for the automated European Entry/Exit System (EES):

  • Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport (OTP)
  • Cluj-Napoca Airport (CLJ)
  • Timișoara Airport (TSR)

Under the EES rollout, travelers register facial biometrics and fingerprints upon first entry, eliminating physical passport ink stamps in favor of centralized digital stay records.

Bilateral Treaties & Legal Context

Romania joined the Schengen Zone for air and maritime borders on 31 March 2024. Border controls at airports for Schengen flights have been eliminated.

Important Disclaimer: Bilateral agreements have complex interactions with the Schengen acquis. Border guards evaluate compliance on individual case facts. Always verify your eligibility with the official General Inspectorate for Immigration / Border Police (Inspectoratul General pentru Imigrări (IGI) / Poliția de Frontieră) before planning extended stays beyond 90 days.

💡 Practical Travel Tip for Romania

Flying between Bucharest and Paris, Frankfurt, or Rome is now an intra-Schengen flight with no border control booths upon landing.
